Server Side Up: EC2 in the Real World.

What differentiates Amazon EC2 from other similar products?
When we moved a good chunk of our infrastructure off-prem and into AWS, EC2 was the first service we truly leaned into — and it’s been our go-to for everything from quick test environments to long-running production workloads. What stood out early wasn’t just the flexibility in instance types, but how elastic and disposable everything suddenly felt
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
What keeps me loyal is how easy it is to tailor compute to the workload. Need GPU-backed instances for ML experimentation? Sorted. Want bare metal for some finicky licensing? Available. Just testing scripts? Go with the cheapest t4g spot instance. And with AMIs, we can pre-bake configurations, which saves us hours every week
What do you dislike most about this product?
If I had to grumble about something, it’d be instance limits. Especially when we start playing with new families or regions, we hit those soft caps and have to request increases.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
EC2 has been the core of our cloud reliability strategy. We run staging and production here, with autoscaling groups watching metrics like hawks. Our incident recovery time dropped significantly after moving critical workloads to EC2, especially with snapshots and AMIs making rollbacks painless. Also, the ability to distribute workloads globally just by launching instances in different regions? That opened new doors for performance tuning.
