What is AutoCAD?

AutoCAD is computer-aided design (CAD) software that is used for precise 2D and 3D drafting, design, and modeling with solids, surfaces, mesh objects, documentation features, and more. It includes features to automate tasks and increase productivity such as comparing drawings, counting, adding objects, and creating tables. It also comes with seven industry-specific toolsets for electrical design, plant design, architecture layout drawings, mechanical design, 3D mapping, adding scanned images, and converting raster images. AutoCAD enables users to create, edit, and annotate drawings via desktop, web, and mobile devices.

King of 2D Drafting

What differentiates AutoCAD from other similar products?

AutoCAD sets itself apart from other similar products by offering a comprehensive range of tools and features for 2D and 3D drafting, design, and documentation. It also provides industry-specific toolsets, such as those for architecture, engineering, and construction, mechanical design, and electrical design. Additionally, AutoCAD benefits from a large and engaged user community, offering extensive resources and support. The software's seamless integration with other Autodesk products via the Vault makes it easy to keep all of your technical information in one place.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

Being a daily user, I enjoy using and getting to know the various commands to boost productivity. Since AutoCAD is the largest 2D drafting software, there are millions of users. Any questions I have can be looked up or posted into the AutoCAD support forums and answers come very quickly.

What do you dislike most about this product?

AutoCAD has occasional stability issues, particularly with larger or more complex drawings, which can lead to crashes or slow performance. I also do not like that by default, drawings save to the version of AutoCAD you are using. For example, without changing the save settings, if I have AutoCAD 2022, the drawings save to that dwg format and cannot be opened by users on older versions. It should be set to an older save format by default as some people may not know how to configure the save settings.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

If you're considering AutoCAD, it's important to be aware of the software's complexity and steep learning curve. Take advantage of the many online resources available, such as tutorials, forums, and user groups, to help you get started and learn how to use the software effectively. Consider taking a training course or certification program to deepen your understanding of the software and improve your skills. It's also a good idea to ensure that your computer meets the software's system requirements to avoid performance issues. Lastly, be prepared for the software's cost, which can be high, particularly for business use.
