What differentiates DigitalOcean from other similar products?

What differentiates DigitalOcean from other VPS providers, for me, is it having no nonsense. Compared with Amazon AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, it is very easy to spin up a VPS with a standard Linux distribution, without the overhead and time spent on a seemingly stupendous amount of bureaucracy in the form of access profiels and other APIs required just to get a virtual machine started. Additionally, DigitalOcean has so many community written guides on a multitude of subjects, making it a pleasure to resolve issues. The guides are useful even for non-DigitalOcean users.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

My favourite aspect of DigitalOcean is that the pricing is clear and upfront. We pay monthly for our VPS based on the RAM, Disk and CPU. Bandwidth allowance is included and clearly stated, and overage prices clearly set. This is in stark contrast to providers like Amazon AWS who you are seemingly signing a blank cheque to.

What do you dislike most about this product?

What I dislike most about DigitalOcean is that in my experience, the object storage service is unreliable and slow and not fit for purpose. Instead we use the volume storage service, which has proved to be even faster than the system SSD storage, and perfectly reliable.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

DigitalOcean offer free trial credit, so for someone considering this product I would recommend taking advantage of this offer and spinning up test virtual machines, and exploring the features that they have to see if it is a good fit for your organisation.

What differentiates DigitalOcean from other similar products?

Google Cloud. Aside from location options Droplets is better at nearly everything. It is easier to use and a lot cheaper.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

It is the cheapest of all server hosting solutions. You can monitor the usage traffic of the server therefore, billing is very transparent. It is very easy to set up. Powering the server on and off is a very quick process and it has no negative effects on the server. Operating systems for virtual machines have different costs and you can choose to use Windows, Linux etc. based on how much you want to spend.

What do you dislike most about this product?

You can’t create more than 10 droplets in free version even if you had credits. There is no live support chat. Location options are limited, for example Google Cloud has more location options.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

We use Droplets to host servers and use virtual machines in order to test the sites and applications that we are building. Saves us a lot of time and money as we don’t need to use any third party for testing.
